9.Correction of Sentences - Modifiers

Model-1

Wrong Question:

Having lost a fortune in the stock market, he does not have some money to invest.

Why?

‘Some’ is used in positive or affirmative sentences. ‘Any’ is used in ‘negative’ and ‘interrogative’ sentences. The above one is a negative sentence. So, ‘any’ is used instead of ‘some’.

Right Question:

Having lost a fortune in the stock market, he does not have any money to invest.

Model-2

Wrong Question:

I have many friends; I’ve known few of them since high school.

Why?

There is a difference between ‘few’ and ‘a few'. ‘A few’ means a small number, not many. ‘Few’ means ‘almost not’. ‘A few’ gives a positive meaning and ‘few’ gives a negative meaning..

Right Question:

I have many friends; I’ve known a few of them since high school.

Model-3

Right Question:

As no one in his family likes politics, he has little interest in it.
